NIH Baby Toolbox for Use in Clinical Settings

Clinicians are constantly searching for the most parsimonious set of assessment tools. Luckily NBT can help with that. NBT can provide comprehensive change-sensitive, and age adjusted scoring for tasks measuring several areas of development at once: Cognitive, Motor, and Social-Emotional. The NBT Score Reports offer a quick and individualized view of the child’s development for diagnostic purposes. Sign in or register to gain access to NIH Toolbox User Resources and view a sample report.

Test Selection

Using the NBT, a clinician can select amongst a wide array of tests across several domains and comprise their own custom battery as needed. For example, to assess a child’s overall development, an examiner can administer tests of expressive language (cognition), fine and gross motor (motor), and social observation (social-emotional) in one session. Because scoring happens automatically, the score report is ready for examiner review at the end of the assessment.

Highlighted Use Case

Using design and assessment principles from the NIH Toolbox for Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function® (NIH Toolbox), the Baby Toolbox is meant to act as an extension appropriate for infants and toddlers. The NIH Toolbox itself has been used by more than 1100 institutional and clinical settings and counting. Populations using NIH Toolbox include people with neurological disorders, psychological disorders, and cancer. We expect that NBT will be used in similar settings. Feasibility in various clinical populations for NBT is currently ongoing.
