NIH Baby Toolbox for Use in Educational Settings
Using state-of-the art test development techniques, including Item Response Theory and eye tracking for the youngest users, the NBT allows educational providers to quickly and reliably assess children with a wide range of abilities.
Test Selection
NBT includes brief measures across key developmental domains including memory, learning, executive functioning, language, math, social-emotional functioning, and motor. The full battery is designed to be administered in-person in under an hour. Scoring is performed automatically during the administration and examiners receive norm-referenced (e.g., age adjusted) scores for both individual tests and composites.

Highlighted Use Case
Using design and assessment principles from the NIH Toolbox for Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function® (NIH Toolbox), the Baby Toolbox is meant to act as an extension appropriate for infants and toddlers. In a series of studies (see Hessl et al, 2016), over 100 individuals with intellectual disability were assessed using the NIH Toolbox. Results showed that NIH Toolbox cognitive tests have the potential for assessing important areas of cognition in people with intellectual disability and can be useful in tracking response to intervention. We expect that NBT will be used in a similar way.
